Practicing Kindness as a Family
When my girls were little, our family would sponsor a Christmas family through our church. We would purchase a week’s worth of non-perishable meals and gifts for each family member. We would plan our shopping and go out together. The week after we did this, the girls were more aware of everything we had. I remember one time, one of them used a tissue and remarked that we didn’t buy tissues for the Christmas family. Since I hadn’t yet dropped off the items, we had to get a box of tissues from our stash to add to the gift. Every year after that, we added tissues to our list. Planning and doing kind and generous things as a family and individually will help children understand the importance of kindness, both when it is planned and as a response.
