After reading the story to the class, write these words on the board:
Worry – Calm
Scared – Brave
Sad – Love
Mad – Gentle
Then process it with these or similar questions:
- Did you like this story? Did it make you feel strong?
- The first list of words are feelings you want to get rid of and the second list are where you want to be. Is is bad to have the feelings in the first list? (No)
- Who helped the person get to the second list of feelings in the first half of the book? (caring adult)
- Who helped the person get to the second list in the second half of the book? (the person)
- Do you think the person learned how to do it themselves by paying attention when a caring adult helped them?
- What were some of the ideas that were in the book to help yourself? (go outside, whistle, making up a funny story, dance, help someone else, color, yell into a pillow, find an adventure)
- Do you think you can find your strong when you need it?
