Cat Knit
by Jacob Grant
Cat and Yarn is a story of two inseparable friends whose world shifts when Yarn returns and is different. Cat’s frustration, confusion, and eventual acceptance opened the door to a powerful conversation about dealing with change. In our classrooms and families, change happens daily, including changes in schedules, new routines, and new emotions. Some children (and adults) roll with it. Others feel just like Cat: unsure, overwhelmed, or even a little mad.
Through the story, we learn
- it’s okay to feel uncomfortable when things change, and it’s also okay to grow through it.
- Flexibility doesn’t mean loving every change; it means staying open, curious, and non-judgmental.
- Change isn’t the enemy but an opportunity to discover something new about themselves.
After reading the story to the class, process it with these or similar questions:
- Did you like the story?
- Did you know what the girl was doing with the yarn?
- How did Cat feel when Yarn returned and was different?
- Did cat like the sweater the girl knit for him?
- How did cat grow through this change he didn’t like at first?
- Did the cat like the sweater when he realized it would keep him warm?
- Will you remember the cat and the yarn and stay open when you experience a change in something?
