Building a Foundation for Wise Choices
by Mary Andres Russell
In our Success through Integrity seminar, participants build a structure using blocks labeled with character qualities. No matter the shape—tower, wall, or skyline—the Wisdom block is always placed last. By then, the structure is wobbly, and the final person must use what they know about balance and steadiness to place the block without toppling everything. That moment captures our definition of Wisdom: applying knowledge and experience to new situations.
Wisdom grows from other qualities, especially Patience. When we slow down and give good choices time to emerge, we draw on past experiences and make better decisions in the present.
Wisdom also helps us seek truth. Instead of assuming the worst, we pause and ask, “What do I actually know, and what am I guessing?” By checking our assumptions and asking thoughtful questions, we uncover what’s real and respond with clarity.
As we apply what life has taught us—through successes, mistakes, and relationships—our choices become wiser, our outcomes improve, and our lives are enriched.
