The Guantlet

Instruct each person to write the letters of their first name in a single column. Then, they are to use the letters in their name to come up with words or phrases that describe themselves. For younger participants, you could have them draw a picture of something they like that starts with the same first sound in their first name. When they have finished, collect the work and read them back or show the picture and have the group guess who it is. For the written work, you will need to mix up the words or phrases or the group will easily be able to spell the name. If the group is relatively new to each other, you may want to read them in order to assist in the guessing.

To process the activity, ask these or similar questions:

  • Was this difficult to write about yourself?
  • After hearing about what others wrote, would you have written anything different?
  • Did you learn anything new about another person?
  • How did it feel when you could tell who it was by knowing a lot about a person?
  • How did it feel when others could tell it was or wasn’t you?
  • Now that you know more about the others in the group, do you feel more connected to them?
