Gamaliel Teaches Us About Cautiousness
In the days after the Resurrection, Jesus’ apostles were preaching and healing the sick. The high priest was jealous of the attention they were receiving, and he had them thrown in prison. That night, an angel let them out of prison, and in the morning, they returned to the temple and began preaching. The apostles were once again brought before the council and reproached for preaching, but they held fast to God and refused to quit. When the other chief priests heard this, they were enraged. Gamaliel, a well-respected Pharisee among them, ordered that the apostles be led outside while he cautioned the council. Gamaliel began to remind them of others they had killed, and their followers scattered, for they were not from God. If these men are not from God, they will not last long. But if they are from God, you don’t want to oppose them. The council agreed with his cautious advice.
