Race to the Finish
Start with a discussion what an obstacle is. You may even move furniture or use dining chairs to create an obstacle course. Next talk about obstacles that keep you from reaching goals or from being the Christian you want to be. Have prepared some pieces of paper that contain the type of obstacles that each child may face at school, in the neighborhood or family. Tape these pieces of paper on each child (the same number of pieces of paper on each child).) The children will run to the other side of the room and remove one piece of paper. They need to give an example of something they can do to overcome the obstacle on the paper and then run back to the start. This will continue until all children have ” stripped off every weight that slows us down” Hebrews 12:1. When all of their pieces of paper are gone, they will return to the start and sit down. Explain that the goal is Finishing the Race. Anyone who finishes wins.
At the end, process the activity with these or similar questions:
- Did you like this race?
- How did it feel to remove an obstacle that was taped to you?
- Was it difficult to come up with suggestions to overcome obstacles?
- Is it okay to get help if you need an idea?
- Will you remember this race the next time you face an obstacle?
