Vanity Plates
Begin this activity by asking what you see on a car’s license plate. You are looking for two things: the state and a unique number/letter combination. In addition, states can add slogans, and individuals can select from additional decorations such as for military or handicapped as well as selecting their own number/letter combination known as a vanity plate. Below are some examples. Can you guess anything about the driver from the vanity plate? Now allow each person to design their own License Plate. You can use the template provided or just blank paper. They can choose the number/letter combination they want; they can Name their “State” by choosing a Character Quality that describes him/herself. Another way to pick the state is a ‘state’ (character quality) they want to live in. They can add artwork or a motto or slogan or something that describes them. Both can use the same name on the plate as long as they are in different states. When they have finished, let them share their plate in small groups. Emphasize that we are all unique and that each of our unique qualities contribute to the personality of the group.
