Warm Fuzzies

The Warm Fuzzy Game
Everyone loves that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when someone does something nice for you. This activity builds on that concept by associating a warm, fuzzy item with acts of kindness. To get started, you can use one of the many stories on the internet or the book The Original Warm Fuzzy Tale by Claude Steiner. You can choose any item to be a Warm Fuzzy but the most common are the yarn pom-poms that you can buy at any craft or fabric store. Use a size that is about the size of a large marble or larger. Adding eyes and construction paper feet to them gives them more ‘personality’. You can start by giving everyone a Warm Fuzzy or make a handful for the group. One theory about Warm Fuzzies is that they will ‘die’ if you keep them, so they must be given away. You can start the activity rather simply with the rule of only keeping it for a while and then giving it away. After they are in the habit of giving them away, then attach more meaning to them. Give them to someone who does something nice or someone who is having a bad day and needs some cheering up. Let this practice continue for several days or weeks. Once they are in the habit of recognizing good deeds and the needs of the others you can remove the physical object and every day just poll the class for examples of others’ good deeds or someone who might need a cheer. You can end the activity by having everyone make one that they must give away to someone not in the group. Each time they give it away, they must explain the rules of the Warm Fuzzies.

Warm Fuzzy Story

After you finish the activity, process it with these or similar questions:
  • Did you like the warm fuzzies?
  • How did it make you feel when someone gave you one?
  • How did you feel when you gave one away?
  • Can you see how giving a warm fuzzy is like sharing the love of God with others?
  • Are there other ways you can share the love of God?
