The
Character Council...Focus on Government
Helping communities prosper
Our leaders and those
who promise to serve and protect our communities should set examples
of good character through the resolutions they pass. In Cincinnati,
for example, a privately funded character training program has been
initiated for all fire and police officers. A similar program has
been used across the country to make communities safer, more pleasant
places to live.
Cincinnati Police Chief
Streicher and Fire Chief Wright are thankful that local business
leaders are contributing to a fund to train their personnel in techniques
encouraging good character. Northern Kentucky businessman
Mike Ellison started the fund with a substantial donation.
Training for Cincinnati police and fire personnel began in October,
2000 and will conclude early next year. This training is part
of the "Cities of Character" initiative signed into effect by Cincinnati
City Council on September 27, 2000. Approximately 450 officers and
firefighters have gone through an intensive one day training with
Sheriff Ray Nash of the Police Dynamics Institute (based in South Carolina)
and Michael Daly, founder of the Character Council. This training requires
officers and firefighters to reflect on their own personal character and
focus on how that affects community relations.
Cities and counties all over the country are passing resolutions to focus
on character development within their jurisdictions. Some of the
resolutions passed in our community include:
- City of Cincinnati
- City of Crescent Springs
- Boone County
- Kenton County School District
