Kentucky Schools of Character Awards Program
In 2009, the Character Council, in partnership with the Character Education
Partnership (CEP), will begin offering annual Kentucky State Schools of Character (SSOC) awards to schools and districts with outstanding
character education initiatives. SSOC will serve as models for other educators within our state just as they are in over 25 other states.
The application process is the same as CEP’s National Schools of Character (NSOC) awards program. State nominees can move to the
national competition where winners receive up to $10,000 to help share their practices with other educators. Learn more about applying
for the SSOC/NSOC awards by downloading the SSOC application. Or go to www.character.org/nsoc for details. The deadline
is December 8, 2008.
Character… It Starts with Me Seminar for Educators
In mid-August, 27 educators and social workers representing 12 schools
participated in the “Character… It starts with me” seminar. With the focus on creating classrooms and lifestyles of high character,
educators were provided character-building insight, techniques, and curriculum materials for the 2008-09 school year. The educators were
delighted with the seminar, giving the day a 9.5 rating out of 10, and sharing a common intention to provide more character-based praise to
students. As Megan Martin, 3rd grade teacher at St. Veronica noted, “Time flew by — this was the best workshop and I have wonderful
ideas to implement.”
The workshop will be repeated on Tuesday, October 28 from 9am—3:30 pm.
